Mercedes-Benz has truly mastered the art of creating beautiful
automobiles with uncompromising luxury and high-performance driving
dynamics. Case in point: the new C63 AMG. Unveiled over the July 4th
holiday, this uber-powerful saloon isn't your typical C-Class,
Mercedes' smallest line of four-doors. It was created to challenge the
BMW M3 for its undisputed King of the Road title—a very formidable
task, indeed.
Lurking under the C63's ridged hood is a powerful 6.3-liter that pumps
out 451 hp and 443 lb.-ft. of torque. That's enough get-up-and-go to
propel the four-door from 0 to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds. Its top speed is
electronically limited at 155 mph.
This fire-breathing road eater looks much different than its more
sedate sibling. Up front, AMG gave it a more aggressive hood, custom
front grille and larger air dams. Around back, you'll find a small but
slick looking rear spoiler and a large black diffuser with pronounced
fins. The chrome tailpipes will make sure this speed demon pulls away
on a solid note.
Inside, there are new sports seats, and the steering wheel, which is
equipped with paddle-shifters, has a flattened lower section. The
seven-speed gearbox has three modes—Sport, Comfort and Manual—and now
automatically blips the throttle for smoother downshifts.
AMG modified the basic C-Class front suspension kinematics by
designing an all-new, three-link front setup that widens the track by
35 mm and doubles the suspension's wheel-locating rigidity. As part of
the AMG sports suspension calibration, the C63 also gets a larger anti-
roll bar, new suspension bearings and stiffer dampers.
The C63 is also the first Mercedes with a new, three-stage ESP
stability control system. In “ESP On” mode, understeer and oversteer
are controlled by automatic application of the brakes and a reduction
in power to the appropriate wheel. In “ESP Sport” mode, the system
allows more drifting before it intervenes. “ESP Off” leaves braking
and throttle control up to the driver. In both “Sport” and “Off,” full
ESP kicks back the moment the brake pedal is touched; in all three
modes, traction control remains active.
Look for the AMG C63 to make its retail debut in Spring 2008. —Chuck
